It's the first time since 2009 that invitation has been extended to financial chiefs of non-member countries to attend G-7 leaders’ summits.
India leads a list of 10 countries that together account for 60 per cent of global maternal deaths, stillbirths and newborn deaths, and 51 per cent of live births globally, a report released by the United Nations has said.The latest published estimate in the progress tracking report by the WHO, UNICEF, and the UNFPA was launched on Tuesday at the ongoing 'International Maternal Newborn Health Conference' (IMNHC 2023) here. It shows there were a combined 4.5 million deaths -- maternal deaths (0.29 million), stillbirths (1.9 million) and newborn deaths (2.3 million) -- in 2020-2021.
Speaking at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Governor's seminar on 'Policies to support Asia's rebound', Sitharaman said sooner a solution is found out by the WTO, the better it would be for the world. "Since WTO was founded, there has been a grievance with respect to the export of agricultural products and generally in trade, the voice of the Global South and emerging markets has not been heard at par with that of the developed countries," she said.
The theme of the April 20-21 conference is 'Response to Contemporary Challenges from Philosophy to Praxis'. It will cover subjects such as Buddhism and peace, environmental crisis, health and sustainability, and the preservation of the Nalanda Buddhist tradition, as well as Buddhist pilgrimage, living heritage and Buddha relics, officials informed.

Korean TV has become a global sensation, with titles like Squid Game and The Glory becoming hugely popular on Netflix. South Korea is now the largest producer of hit series globally for the streaming service outside the US, with over 60% of its customers watching a Korean show last year. Other companies have also been keen to capitalize on the success of Korean content, with Disney+ and Apple TV+ among global streaming services exploring deals to invest in the country.
South Korea's exports are seen as a barometer of global trade as the country sells products including chips, refined oil etc.
The shift underlines the struggle China is currently going through in securing crucial chip machines to improve upon its chips.
"This report (Synthesis Report of the IPCC) is a call for action for all countries, especially countries like India, which are very vulnerable to climate change given their location in the tropics. The report provides a menu of climate actions, both mitigation and adaptation actions, which India can implement based on its national circumstances," Mukherjee told PTI in an online interview.
The research showed that globally, countries requested more than 6.6 million accounts combined between 2013-2021, while India requested 823,000.
While it may be purely coincidental, the next troika of G20 will comprise India, the current chair, Brazil, the successor, and South Africa, the next in line. Each of them are situated in three different continents, comprising the Global South. Expectedly, the troika will enable the countries to continue to coordinate their plans.
"Current global architecture is in its 8th decade. The number of members of the UN has quadrupled in this period. It neither reflects today's politics, economics, demographics or aspirations. Since 2005, we have heard sentiments for reform being expressed at the highest level. But as we all know, these have not materialised. The reasons are no secret either. The longer we put it off, the more the credibility of multilateralism stands eroded. Global decision-making must be democratised if it has to have a future," he said.
In his remarks at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, without mentioning the Ukraine conflict, said the grouping must find common ground and provide direction to the world though there are some "matters of sharp differences".
The RBI Governor said G20 is poised for a transformational journey and within the finance track, the effort will be to entrench unwavering faith in G20 as a multilateral forum to address challenges.
"I see the G20 Presidency of India as a real opportunity for India to share lessons from the global South with the rest of the world," Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Anita Bhatia told PTI in an exclusive interview here Monday.
Referring to India's G20 presidency, Birla emphasised on priorities of India's G20 stint and assured that India will make efforts to include concerns of Global South in G20 framework. Stressing on collective efforts to contain climate change, Birla said India has already taken the initiative of International Solar Alliance and is working with the objective of harnessing energy from renewable sources.
Addressing the concluding session of the Virtual Voice of Global South Summit, Modi also announced that India will launch the Global South Science and Technology Initiative to share its expertise in areas such as space technology and nuclear energy, and establish the Global South Center of Excellence for research on development solutions that can be scaled up and implemented around the world.
India has emerged as a global south education and healthcare hub. Our capacity-building programmes and first-responder activities in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) situations are important expressions of this approach.
Serious impacts of climate change are looming large over many developing nations that have contributed little to it, he remarked at the virtual summit of leaders of the Global South hosted by India. Yadav said the solution to climate change and environmental degradation is possible only when "we work together towards a common goal".
Eight ministerial level sessions will be conducted, focusing on areas such as energy security, the global economy, climate change and food security. Two heads of states sessions are also planned. A session to be hosted by external affairs minister S Jaishankar will focus on G20 and expectations of the global south. Officials have not yet shared details of all the invitees, particularly whether nations such as Pakistan, Ukraine and China have been invited.
India's UNSC non-permanent membership comes to a close on December 31. Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway diplomats to the UN also addressed the wrap-up session as they, too, would exit the UNSC after 2-year term. "On behalf of the Council, I would also like to express the sincere appreciation of the Council to the five outgoing members, namely, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway. I commend their hard work and contributions during their terms on the Security Council," she said.
India and Japan is planning joint fighter jets exercises. And there is a possibility that India will import Japan’s UNICORN for their naval ships.
